The Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar® (MT/R – Maximum Traction/Reinforced) is Goodyear’s Off-Road Maximum Traction tire developed for light truck driving enthusiasts who take off-road traction seriously. The Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar is designed to increase tire toughness when it conquers mud, crawls over rocks and explores trails.

The Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar features a silica rubber tread compound molded into an asymmetric tread design that combines off-road traction with on-road handling and wet traction. Goodyear’s advanced mud-flow geometry tread design enhances self-cleaning capabilities while shoulder blocks (which alternate being stepped in and out) and a wraparound tread design on the upper sidewall increase traction in mud, sand, ruts and rocks. The tire’s internal structure features twin steel belts and is Goodyear’s first off-road tire to incorporate Dupont Kevlar, an innovative material that’s, pound for pound, five times stronger than steel. The use of Kevlar sidewall reinforcement brings enhanced cut and puncture resistance to an area of the tire that demands extra toughness when driving off-road (increasing sidewall cut and puncture resistance by about 35% compared to the original Wrangler MT/R). The Kevlar also helps stabilize the sidewalls when drivers return to the pavement for the ride home.

Off-Road Maximum Traction light truck tires, which are often called mud tires, are branded with the M+S symbol, but their typical oversize applications, use of extra-large smooth lugs and minimal snow-biting sipes often challenges an Off-Road Maximum Traction tire’s on-road wintertime traction in slush, packed snow and on ice.

  1. I own a group of Jeeps, Mercedes AMGs, SUVs and Trucks. I drive a lot of miles across them and I use this truck in all seasons and from the southwest to the northeast. I ran the previous generation of Goodyear MTRs in 35″ and 37″ for over 400,000 miles on 5 vehicles and it was head and shoulders superior to this “new” Kevlar version in every area except pure rock performance. This tire is one of the best I’ve ever used on rock and it surpassed only by the BFG Krawlers on my TJ. To say this tire is a disappointment would be an understatement. The price is ridiculous even on sale. I have the exact same F150 a 2013 Platinum with Toyo MT’s on it and they are 20x the tire on road, in sand, snow, and the ride noise is much, much less. 18db using a DB meter inside the cab at 75mph to be exact. Tread-wear with these tires is despicable and like most off road oriented tires these days they got much louder at 5,000 miles at 11,000 miles even with constant rotations they are worn to the carcass. This is a poorly designed tire, save your money and get a Toyo MT or a BFG K02 if you can use an all terrain.

  2. Compared to other tires that iv driven on the GoodYear has the best in slow and high speed ride quality (when they are properly balanced) and are the quietest in the same fields. I’ve taken my truck over some very sketchy areas both in heavy snow/ice and nasty mud. This tire has out performed my expectations. Now some back ground where i live- I live in the wonderful state of Colorado blessed with being close to not only our well known mountains but also our lesser know deserts. These tires have taken me and my truck into and out of areas where a lesser tire would have gotten stuck. Most of the obstacles that i went threw were in 2wd, and only in rare occasions did i actually feel the need for 4wd. The self cleaning tread block design has been a life saver. Recently me and a friend took our truck into the mountains behind where we live and several times he got stuck and fell behind me (BFG KO2 2012 4runner sr5). And just as a point of reference the mud out here is thick, sticky, deep and all around a nightmare with out a winch/ tires/ or a buddy to pull you out.

  3. I use these tires in a very bad mud environment, in the jungle of Peru. Our mud is the worst kind, sticky, thick, slipery. It is a headache for most tires. So I wanted the best recommended, and I got the Wrangler MT/R Kevlar. I am impressed about their performance. I only got stuck twice, in conditions that ANY other car would have. It didn’t help that I didn’t have blocking difs. But where others strugle, I can go with more confidence. The problems started to appear when the thread was weared more than half. It was a dry day, and I was doing 40 MPH on a graveled road in 4×4 mode. I had to avoid an obstacle. When I recovered, the car entered into tail spin, and I had an 180 degrees, very scary, and almost rolled. At that speed, the tires didn’t hold their ground, and slipped sideways. Another very disappointing episode was when motorcycle passed so close that a pin/nut from the rear axle touched my rear right wheel. The tire was cut with no regards to the Kevlar label on it, on the whole diameter (my car was not moving). The waranty that I claimed was useless. Now at 20000Miles, the thread is just 1/3 of the original. The tires struggle a lot to get the car out of a rut, and mostly cannot do it anymore. Need new tires. I have a feeling that these, for what they cost, should have lasted a bit longer… at least 25000 miles.

  4. I use this tire primarily for rock crawling and trips to and from, these take a lot of abuse and get shown no mercy. These tires perform excellent in every situation, never lost a bead.

  5. Have had Goodyear Wrangler tires before on my wife’s jeep with excellent results in dry, wet, snow conditions, with excellent tire life of 45-50K miles per set. These Kevlar reinforced tires were a disappointment. These are the only Wranglers I ever got a tire puncture in. These were also poor performers on snow. Not very good on snow slush road, to the point I hydroplaned and spun the vehicle into a guard rail. Not much damage, its a jeep, easy to fix a bumper, but I blame the tires and poor traction in bad snowy driving conditions. Now at 35k miles, tread is about 1/8 and need to replace before the winter. I am replacing with another set of Wrangler Duratracs to give Goodyear another chance at my business given all the previous good experiences with Goodyear and the good reviews on these other Wrangler tires in snow.

  6. 21,000 miles, treadwear even, now almost no tread terrible tire, all worn equally, had to go through warranty and they don¿t back it upGoodyear —-s, but I have to get them again because of warranty.

  7. Thus far, the driving experiences after outfitting my (XJ) 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport with a set of Good Year Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar tires can be summed up with one word: PHENOMENAL! The great state of Arkansas provides every possible driving condition one could possibly encounter. From the uncontrollable driving conditions brought on by weather to voluntarily accepting the extreme driving conditions presented by journeying into the deep woods in search of remote camping spots and the many off-road parks within the state. I have driven these tires on dry, icy, snow covered, and rain soaked highways/roadways with either my XJ as a solo or in tandem with my bass boat or twin 4-wheelers in tow. These tires have also climbed over downed trees blocking deep wood trails, crawled over rocks of all shapes and sizes, flung sand and silt along the Arkansas River, plowed through deep pits of sloppy mud, and traversed flowing creeks and streams. With all the extreme and precarious driving conditions I’ve put them through, rather than leaving me stranded or stuck, these tires have had no problems overcoming obstacles and they always get me home. Speaking of problems, I haven’t had any issues with tire balancing or unusual wear. Perhaps it is due to the fact that I rotate and check tire balance every 2000 miles because of the rigours I put them through. Tire noise isn’t an issue either as others have voiced. These are arguably the quietest extreme traction tires I’ve driven. However, some tire noise is to be expected, especially with the aggressive, knobby tread pattern. On the other hand, the traction that comes as a result of this tread pattern is why I am able to confidentiality drive my XJ anytime, anywhere, on road or off-road. For this same reason, I will continually have a set of Good Year Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar tires on my XJ.
