The Scorpion Ice & Snow is Pirelli’s Light Truck/SUV Performance Winter / Snow tire developed for the drivers of luxury crossover and sport utility vehicles, as well as many of today’s modern muscle cars, like the Chevy Camaro, Chrysler 300C, Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang. The Scorpion Ice & Snow is designed to enhance low-temperature wintertime driving performance by combining predictable handling on dry and wet roads with traction in snow and on ice.

The Scorpion Ice & Snow tire features a tread rubber compound that remains flexible at lower ambient temperatures to enhance grip and handling in typical winter conditions. The tread compound is molded into a subtly asymmetric tread design that features a stable shoulder area to enhance dry road handling, circumferential grooves to provide hydroplaning resistance and help maintain good traction on wet and slush-covered roads while angled independent tread blocks with circumferential and lateral sipes help the tire bite into snow.

The Scorpion Ice & Snow winter / snow radials meet the industry’s severe snow service requirements and are branded with the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol.

Install Scorpion Ice & Snow tires in sets of four only.

Vehicles should always be equipped with equivalent tires at all wheel positions. These winter / snow tires, due to their exceptional snow and ice traction provided by their unique tread compounds, must be used in sets of four to help ensure proper vehicle control

  1. The performance is good in all conditions but the road noise is intolerable above 65 mph. Above 75 it is absolutely crazy. Can’t take it anymore and must replace for that reason. Performance is good but not worth the it. Will drive you insane. If you only drive under 60 they are great. Otherwise don’t do it!!!!

  2. Just purchased a set of Pirelli Scorpion ice and snow tires. Just after a few days of getting the tires put on it snowed several inches. What a huge difference these tires made. Changing lanes going through the slush and deeper snow had total control. These are great tires so far.

  3. Everyone I know tried to talk me out of buying these tires, even the good folks here at Tire Rack. I know they only had my interests at heart, so please understand that my remark is not intended as a slight. I was told that these tires would be horrible in Florida, that they would be loud, wear out immediately, and one rather uninformed individual (not from Tire Rack) went so far as to tell me that they would **MELT** in the Florida heat. Clearly, this person has never been trapped in Manhattan during a bad summer. The truth is, all the folks above (including the good folks at Tire Rack), may have taken the “winter” aspect of these tires a bit too literally. The winter designation, especially on a world-class tire like Pirelli, doesn’t mean that the tires will detonate if one tries to drive on them 30 seconds past midnight on June first, it just means that they are *optimized* for winter use – not that they can’t be used at any other time. These tires have been an absolute *JOY* to drive on, here in south Florida, where one day is wretchedly hot, and the following sees us inundated with 14 inches of rain in three minutes. The Scorpions have handled the severe wet weather with ease (the main reason I bought them, other than their unbeatable price), cruise whisper quietly, respond almost *instantaneously* to steering input, and give a wonderfully smooth, and comfortable ride. What else does one want from a tyre? I understand that these tires won’t last quite as long as a set *optimized* for summer touring, but at about $80 a piece, with the incredible performance, and wet-weather safety that they deliver, I am now thinking of buying a second set to have on hand, for when these wear out in about 30,000 miles! They’re THAT good, even in Florida, Arid-Zona, Connect- a-Cut, Maing, East Dakota, or even South Virginia, the place is irrelevant – these are exceptional tires that will serve you WONDERFULLY, wherever you live!

  4. This is fourth set of tires that I bought of Tirerack.com and for sure that’s not the last one. Although I’m fan of Michelin’s tires I’m really impressed with performance of this set of Pirelli’s winter tires. This winter season my wife and I drove to Winter Park, Colorado from Chicago and we didn’t even have to wait much to try new tires in winter conditions that no one wants to drive. Freezing blizzard on the I-76 for over 60 miles, trucks flipped over on both sides of the highway. Up in the mountains the conditions weren’t better at all but we’ve made it thanks to the new set of Pirelli winter tires. Now, something for unbelievers that deny winter tires purpose – if you traveling with your kids during the winter and you are not using winter tires you are risking life of your precious munchkins. It doesn’t matter if you have 4×4 or AWD and it doesn’t matter how good driver you’re. It’s must have for traveling families and better have for the rest of us unless you live in Florida of course 🙂 Thank you Tirerack.com !

  5. I bought these dedicated snow tires for our Snowy Vt winters. They are fine for highway and rain, but absolutely horrible in the snow and in slippery conditions .Nokia. Tires were not available in the size I required but are outstanding in snowy conditions,Likewise Bridgestone Blizzaks are equally good but short on tire life. For next winter I plan on getting rid of the Pirelli¿s as they are actually dangerous . I am not eager to rebuy expensive tires but these are so bad I just don¿t want to take anymore chances with them .Sorry Tire Rack, not your fault.

  6. I matched these tires on another set of wheels strictly for the winter. These tires are by far the best tires i e ever driven on in the winter. .5 inches of ice and snow to 3 feet of snow… these tires did very well. Very comfortable tire, they do not wear fast and they are quiet. 6.5 inches on the ground I switched the car into front wheel only and they still did amazing things in the snow. I live on a hill and where there are lots of steep hills… in the snow it’s like driving up the California coast… easy. Buy these tires. You won’t regret them.

  7. Running these in the winter months only on my 2016 Pilot Touring in a 245/60R18 size on dedicated wheels, as opposed to the 245/50R20 OE size. This is the second winter with these tires. It appears that this 18″ size isn’t offered by Pirelli anymore for some reason. PROS: Very quiet for a winter tire that’s heavily siped, with only some “sizzle” noise on smooth pavement at higher speeds; pretty decent wet/dry handling and traction for a winter tire in non-snow conditions; very good deep snow traction like when going up snow-covered driveway from a stop. CONS: Very poor traction in light snow conditions (less than 1″), slides around like a normal All-season tire would when there’s just a dusting of snow, which makes it not a good choice for where I live in Ohio that doesn’t get heavy snow. Not very good in normal snow handling. OVERALL: Seems more like a standard all-season tire except for good deep snow traction. I expected better grip in the light snow conditions. Probably would not buy again since those are important factors for a winter tire.

  8. Excellent tires. Very little noise for a winter tire. Does very well in deep snow. The only negative is that for my car, a heavy Tesla, I only got 15 thousand miles from them. However, I did buy another set because I was so pleased with the performance.

  9. Replacing at year old set, as the first week really good. Had excellent snow traction and breaking performance. Wanted something to complement Michelin Pilot Sport tires in winter, and these are them. A very good performance winter tires.

  10. Rock Solid performance through 6 seasons of winter in Ottawa Ontario, where snow arrives and generally stays, and ice and slush conditions abound from late November through to early April. Never stuck and never in a steer and pray condition. Great tire to mate with the 2.3L dZi Turbo that gives the CX-7 its ZoomZoom.

  11. Wow, after I have replaced my old Goodyear Eagle RS-A (pretty good OEM tires), i was so surprised by my new Scorpions with its comfort level at first, with very soft and nice ride, and almost no noise in the car. I have Mazda CX-7 and it is a very noisy car itself, Japan cars don’t have such good noise isolation as American (let’s say Cadillacs or even Chryslers) or German (BMWs or Mercedes’s). So comfort level was first and biggest surprise of Pirelli Scorpio Ice&Snow. Then Wet Traction is just superior. I usually drive 85-90 miles per hour in US, i would say always, does not really matter dry, rain or snow (sorry guys, i have no speeding tickets for 16 years, I know how to talk nice to troopers and police, so i am lucky on this side). I am from Europe, so in Germany for example I am driving up to 160-170 MPH (if car allows, usually if BMWs-170MPH, Volvos-160MPH, Opels-156MPH). So with these new Scorpios I would drive up to the its limit with no concerns, even on the wet road. Nice nice tires, probably once of the best I have ever used o my cars. I belive that I have found the best tire for the Mazda CX-7. Will see how it will wear out with time, but as of today I am very happy with these Scorpions.

  12. Used to drive with Nokian, but these Pirelli are amazing. Couple with 4 wheels drive car its king of a perfect match. Let see how long they will performed that way but up to now, I’m totally satisfied. Thank you Tirerack for the recommandation.

  14. Blizzard of ’13, tires made mincemeat out of 235 mile drive from NYC to Vermont on the Taconic Parkway. Left right as it was kicking up 2PM, and passed 7 accidents, 1 overturned car, and a dozen who couldn’t find enough traction to make it up hills. Easy cruise at avg 45mphs all the way there. Me and the family we’re skiing Saturday morning!

  15. If you are driving a rear wheel drive car like my camaro and it snows where you live get a set for the winter driving. Took my pirelli stock tires off due to slipping and sliding on the smallest amount of snow and put the scorpions on and WOW!!!! huge difference no slipping or sliding at all. Went thru 6″ of snow with no problem the Ice is very good as well due to the siping on the tread. Would have liked to be able to stud them but cant. One bad thing they are louder than the all season tires particularly on rough roads.Cornering is a little less stable than the all seasons as well. If it snows get a set ASAP!

  16. I have owned great German Cars in the past, 2-M3’s and 1-M5 and have always had two sets of tires and wheels. After I purchased my GTS. and went through 3 sets of tires in no time, I knew it was time for a change. The Pirelli’s and my GTS work together just great. I know there is not much snow in Charlotte NC, but I opted for the protection of having the tire on for when it does have a blizzard here, ( 1 inch ). I drive from here to Virginia and back and also towards Fla., with no problem and would recommend these tires for daily use… Love them !!

  17. I had the factory summer tires still on the vehicle during our first snow of the year in Colorado. It was like Bambi on ice. I could not get a purchase on the road to save my life. It felt like I was on bearings. Once these tires were installed, the difference was night and day. I was cautious with my expectations being such wide tires. I thought that I may ‘float’ and not ‘slice’ down to traction. I was wrong. These things grip the ice and snow way better than I expected. Acceleration and braking is great and cornering is not an issue either. I tried to push the boundaries to see if I could get sideways but the ties and vehicle mechanisms kept me in line. With the original tires, the car tried to correct itself but the traction was too far gone. I could get sideways without trying. These things are awesome!

  18. Replaced Conti Contacts M&S two days ago. Road force balanced. Drove 150 miles in rain today. What a difference! Vehicle handles much better, rides much better. Feels glued to the road, no more wandering and constant correcting, absorbs bumps and potholes better. Just as quiet as Conties. Never going back to the Conties. Hope to update at 5 or 10K.

  19. Although these are rated for snow and ice, I expect better road smoothness and comfort. At certain speeds around 60 mph the vehicle vibrates as if the tires are not balanced. Tire size also seems very small for vehicle even though this site suggested aggressive tire fitment. Not happy at all with the outcome of the product.

  20. So far the tires are great. They have excellent grip when accelerating in the snow and surprising very good on dry roads. One of the better winter tires I’ve driven. Stopping power on snow has been excellent and a great improvement over the Bridgestone All Season. Ride comfort is great but I’m coming from 20″ all season rims. Road noise I think is normal. I typically have the stero on so I’m never to worried about noise. For those interested these are meant for winter time only. I personally will be switching back to all seasons for the spring. So far so good and Extremely pleased with my purchase. I will buy these again.

  21. 245/45R20 – Great tire for winter weather, which we have had a boatload of this year. The tire takes the worry right out of bad weather commuting. It cuts right through the snow and slush and seems to offer a decent grip on glare ice. Coupled with the car’s AWD, it’s like I’m driving a rally car/tank when other cars around me struggle to move. I probably drive with too much confidence, to be honest. The dry performance sees a reduction in steering precision and ultimate dry traction, which is standard for a winter tire. The noise is also somewhat elevated due to the open block design and high sipe density. I purchased a second set of these for my wife’s SUV, which now enjoys the same benefits.

  22. After 5 Illinois winters and 5 snowy trips to MN in December, these are shot, but they have served their purpose. No accidents, no property damage, and strong piece of mine when driving on them. We are ready to purchase another set of the same, almost time to swap out for the 20’s, summer is finally almost here. It’s been a VERY long winter, and we’ve beaten our all-time snowfall record by almost 5″ this year. Measurable snowfall 41 days this winter, also a record. I would absolutely recommend these to anyone with an SUV, and one of my friends has them on his CTS-V as well, and has been surprised by snowfall, and it’s controllable with these tires as well.

  23. Went to a custom size to fit these on Redline rims. Luv these tires, got me thru another harsh winter (for Ohio) and lacking the time & $$ to invest in summer tires right now, as I’ve read previously here I will take them into the summer months & keep an eye on treadwear & performance. I have some twisty S-turn hilly roads in my commute & the Scorpions got me up & down those roads this winter with nary a slip. Can’t wait to get these for my wife’s car as well! These are one of the BEST cold-weather tires & possibly all-season as well. Pirelli: Keep up the great work!

  24. Tires just mounted on vehicle. Was looking for a snow and ice tire that would provide quite comfortable ride (over Cleveland’s many potholes) while adding snow/ice capaility for Cleveland winters. For now, I can say the tire delivers on expectations of smooth and comfortable ride without added noise which typically accompanies winter tires. I have run Blizzaks (squishy and sluggish with added road noise) and Dunlaps (great complement to my RWD 750Li providing total confidence in snow/ice and offered go anywhere capability for our Honda Odyssey on ski trips) and Mitchelin Ice (S500). So far – the Pirelli Snow & Ice are just what the doctor ordered for my X5 – 50i. Will provide update once the snow flies…many thanks to all those submitting reviews to help with my selection for this vehicle. I did not get RFT snows, as I hate the hard ride and low mileage associated with run flats- I will take my chances with with an inflaor kit and BMW assistance/AAA.

  25. My second set of these tires on this vehicle. Got 32,000 on the first set. Bought them for winter use, but liked them so much that we left the current set on year-round. Wear has suffered, of course, since these aren’t really meant for hot weather driving, but they are so comfortable and handle so well that it was just too easy to leave them on. We live in the Sierra foothills, and do get snow in most winters, and these have never let me down. At about 20,000 miles, they start to get a little noisy, but up to that point, they are quiet and comfortable. About to buy new ones, but am a little concerned because my size does not appear to be available any longer. Will have to talk to Tire Rack and get their recommendation.

  26. Excellent traction in snow and ice conditions. I am in south east PA where there is moderate snow, but the roads are mainly clear throughout the winter. These are excellent in snow and also perform very well in dry and wet conditions which usually prevail in our winter here. They are smooth and quiet. I feel very safe driving in snow with these. They have worn very little and evenly over the first 4000 miles. I would not hesitate to recommend these tires.I also bought a set for my wife’s Acura MDX. They are just as good on that vehicle.

  27. i’m very pleased with these tires and myself. I live in the Blue Ridge mountains, where snow is occasional, but I have a 2 mile gravel + mud + hairpin turn trip to my driveway. Snow is an every-other-year thing, so I’ve been using all-seasons, unhappily. But I decided to look at the non-snow performance of snow tires when I needed a replacement, both at TireRack and in the German tire magazines, and ignore the comparative snow+ice ratings (because the worst would be better than the all-seasons). Pirelli Scorpion Ices stood out, so I took a chance, and, compared to the allseason Falkenhayns and Kumhas I’ve had, they are a clear step up in performance in summer and fall on wet and dry surfaces. They have a very slight but low-throated rumble, but feel just as smooth on the highway. Moreover, my mileage has gone up 1-2 miles/g, tank after tank. Other reviews say that the treadwear is good – it’s too early to tell. But as a solution for the country driver just south of the snow belt, they are a great solution even if it doesn’t snow again for the next 2 winters.

  28. Incredible tire. All of my questions were answered immediately when the snow came hard the first week of installation. I’ve run Blizzacks, Dunlop winter sports, and others but these lead the pack. They took the trip to Florida and back so well I’m leaving them on year round. Barely any noise and none above my wifes chirping. Thanks to all reviewers who were spot on with this tire. Interested to see how many miles I get but no biggie cause the OEM’s and the Conti allseasons only gave me 22-25k and can’t touch these in the snow. Great job by Pirelli and thats why I always buy from tirerack

  29. Drove 1-25 from Santa Fe to Denver last weekend and ran into a heavy hail and rain storm. There were 2-3 inches of hailin Colorado Springs and the tires were fantastic for the entire trip. They run beautifully in snow and Pirelli has a realwinner with this tire. Cannot recommend highly enough.

  30. Had almost no snow or ice this winter but lots of rain. As expected these tires handled the rain without issue. Superior wet weather performance. After two mid-Atlantic winters these tires impress for their relative quiet, smoothness and overall competence on dry and wet roads. My mpg suffers only a little. I still have 12/32 tread on all 4 tires. Wear has been even, keeping the pressure at 38 to 40 psi.Just (Mar 28, 2012) took them off for the summer. Put on a set of Continental ProContact with EcoPlus Technology on my OEM wheels.

  31. We were hesitant about Pirelli tires, because they aren’t the greatest all seasons on Camaro’s but the Winter Scorpion tires are the best!! We are on the 2nd winter of using these! Might even get a 3rd Winter! They last! Last year I rescued people with my Camaro and people with SUV’s and regular cars were stuck. They laughed at me the beginning of the year… They didn’t after that!.

  32. Deep-snow traction I’m at a disadvantage because the stock “Redline Vue” wheels are wide, thus they tend to “float atop” snow, rather than sink down and get purchase / traction. These Pirelli Scorpion Ice & snow tires are GREAT for YEAR-Round use, so long as you’re NOT in constantly hot climates like Florida / Arizona, etc. Mine STILL have plenty of tread, they just turned 4 years old & I”ll definitely get another season out of them! Way to go , Pirelli!Note: Had to custom-size these Snow & Ice to fit the 18″ rims on redline. 245/55/R-18

  33. This is an update. My wife traveled through 15 inches plus of unplowed snow with these tires in the x5. Slow going but did not get stuck getting to work. I am so grateful that we put these tires on both of our x5s. The performance on dry and wet roads is excellent too which is important since most of our winter driving is under these conditions in South Central PA. I am totally impressed with the performance especially in deep snow. On ice you obviously have to take caution but these do grip better than any tire I have used without studs. Will definitely buy again if available.
