The Dunlop SP Sport 01 DSST (Dunlop Self-Supporting Technology) is an Ultra High Performance Summer self-supporting run-flat tire for sports cars, coupes and sedans. SP Sport 01 DSST tires were initially developed for Original Equipment use by leading automotive manufacturers to complement the latest in vehicle design and offer temporary extended mobility in the event a puncture allows complete pressure loss. Like all summer tires, SP Sport 01 DSST tires are not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

Dunlop Self-Supporting Technology (DSST) tires incorporate special sidewall reinforcements that support the weight of the vehicle even after sustaining air pressure losses that would render conventional tires immobile. While internal tire damage will likely make replacement necessary, DSST tires are designed to endure being run on while flat for up to 50 miles at speeds up to 55 mph and provide drivers the temporary extended mobility necessary to drive through stormy weather and away from dangerous situations.

SP Sport 01 DSST tires feature a 100% silica tread compound that increases dry and wet grip while reducing rolling resistance and increasing treadwear. The tread compound is molded into an asymmetric Tri-Area-Tread design that is divided into three tread segments to blend sportiness and safety. The tires’ internal structure includes twin steel belts reinforced by Dunlop’s Jointless Band (JLB) spiral wrapped nylon to provide high speed durability and feature a rayon cord reinforced casing to enhance durability.

  1. I have a 2010 mini cooper convertible. I have only driven 13,000 on this car and have already replaced three of these Dunlop SP Sport 01 tires on the front of the vehicle. Lost the first two at 8,000 miles and just lost another one at 10,000. I would suggest not putting these tires on this car in Hawaii. Road conditions are poor here but still hard to swollow $400 every time the sidewalls starts to bulge out due to some mishap or defect. Driving becomes stressful since you have to actively scan the road for any pot holes since these tires can’t take much. I check the pressure and everything. If this happens on a small car, I am sure it is worse on a larger one. These tires are also very hard and not comfortable. Love the mini just hate the tires. Will probably trade this car in next year and get another without run flat tires. Only changing the tires to keep the factory original items on the car. If you think you can change them out with other tires – think again – without a spare most places will not put regular tires on the vehicle….since my run flat mini has no spare tire.

  2. After experiencing the same noise problem that other BMW owners have had with these tires, I tried in vain to call BMW to find out if they would do anything about this problem. In short, they told me to call Dunlop. Why am I not surprised by their response. Dunlop just gave me the same run around….as expected. The ultimate driving experience has become the ultimate “noise” experience. Do not buy Dunlop tires…..ever!!!!!!S Peres/Toronto

  3. Extremely disappointed. First 7000 miles on tires, complained to BMW dealership about tremendous road noise. The dealership blamed it on recall and replaced it with smiles. Another 7000 miles past on new tires, tremendous road noise again. Took my BMW to dealership and complained again, this time no free replacements and smiles. I was blamed for not taking good care of tires. This kind of headache with the tires and car make me want to get rid of my BMW. This is my third BMW. The first was a 528i, no problem. The second & third was a 530i & 545i both were sport pkg. with Dunlop & Michelin tires had TREMENDOUS road noise. What does it tell you. Dunlop tires and BMW lost me.

  4. 11K miles on OE tires!? They started out noisy, but I had to belieive that the engineers at BMW knew waht they were doing…perhaps I would sacrifice a little noise in exchange for better handling? NOT! These tires are noisy, they dont stick the way they should, and to top it all off, they began to prematurely wear out and eventualy scalloped at 10,000 miles. The dealer told me “thats what happens when you buy a BMW Sport Sedan”. My response: “why didnt this happen to the other five BMW Spoert Sedans Ive owned over the years?” Bottom line is that these are inferior tires made worse by BMWs reluctance to admit as much. I understand there is a class action brewing on this one. To add insult to injury, these are runflats which must, according to the service advisor, be replaced with runflats, or “BMW will void the remaining warranty…plus you will lose the sporty nature of the driving experience”. Let me tell you, the day the BMW engineers plan an OE tire to last only 10K miles after which you lose the sporty nature of the BMW driving experience, is the day I move my portfolio 100% into Mercedesstock. I switched to Pirelli Pzeros, and you should, too.

  5. Ive had a 330xi with BMW factory Continentals & I was quite happy with them. I recently bought a 545i w/ sport package with 20,000 miles on it. After now putting 3,000 miles on it I say with total sincerity that BMW should be embarassed by how aweful these tires are. Loud as a truck and jittery on both dry and wet surfaces, these tires are just plain BAD. They have worn unevenly, with the innermost band of tread completely “out-of-synch” with the main section. I have not “pushed the limit” on the 545 like I could on the 330xi as Im afraid Ill be off the road in a ditch. Google “BMW 545i tire troubles” and youll see an unbelievable amount of the same kind of feedback. I brought the car to my local BMW dealer and they were quick to acknowledge that these tires have been a big problem — in fact, BMW will warrant them for full replacement so long as they have less than 20,000 miles. I was out of luck due to my mileage, but even if they did offer to replace them with the same brand, Id probably turn them down.Even my rickty old 71 corvette with $90 BFG Radial T/As has more grip (wet or dry)than I get from these crappy Dunlops.

  6. This is my second set of these tires. The first set were deemed defective and replaced by the dealer after a nasty vibration set in around 12,000 miles. Guess what? The second set started to vibrate around the same mileage only this time the dealer says they dont warranty tires. The cause of the vibration is scalloping, which was the same issue on the first set. My question to BMW: )why put crap tires on a car to begin with, 2)why replace them with the same tires when you know theres an issue, and 3) why not stand behind the tires when they go south? Sign me up for that class action.Beyond the above, Im not a fan of run flat tires. The harder compound and sidewalls leads to premature breakaway when cornering, especially in the wet, and they get noisy very quickly.

  7. I got my car with these tires and i must admit i love them. I swap for winter tires. Every spring I put them back on and they rock.
